Movie Night: Garm Hava

Thursday, September 12th, 2024

8:00 PM - 10:30 PM ET 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM PT

Join us as we gather to watch the 1973 Partition drama, Garm Hava.

We'll meet on Zoom to watch this classic film that contributed to a wave of art cinema in Hindi films and is one of the few serious films to tell the story of the Muslim plight in India following the 1948 Partition.

The movie follows the life of a Muslim businessman and his family living in North India after the assassination of Gandhi and their struggles of whether to move to Pakistan or stay in India where their rights and respect amongst the community in Agra are in jeopardy.

The event will begin with a community check in prior to the film and end with a short reflection and discussion.

This film is based on the unpublished work of Ismat Chughtai, famous Indian Urdu writer, filmmaker, and liberal humanist. Her works are heavily themed around issues surrounding female sexuality, femininity, and class conflict. Chughtai was the recipient of Padma Shri award in 1976.

We look forward to seeing you for this incredible film!

This event is free and we are asking for all attendees to make an optional donation to Act!ion Aid India, an organization that seeks to end gender-based violence and provide relief and rehabilitation to survivors.
